Agatha awards are presented at the annual Malice Domestic Mystery Convention based on the votes of convention attendees. The award is named in honor of Agatha Christie, prolific author of “cozy” mysteries, which are typically set in the English countryside.

The Alabama Camellia Award program (formerly known as the Emphasis on Reading program) selects books from three grade level categories: K-1, 2-3, and 4-6. The award promotes books by Alabamians, about Alabama or an Alabamian. Books should introduce various cultures, avoid sterotypes, have well-developed characters. Books should have illustrations that enhance and relate to the text.

The Alex Awards were created to recognize that many teens enjoy and often prefer books written for adults, and to assist librarians in recommending adult books that appeal to teens. The award is named in honor of the late Margaret Alexander Edwards, fondly called “Alex” by her friends, a young adult specialist at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore. The Alex Awards are funded by the Margaret Alexander Edwards Trust, consposored by Booklist and the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA).

The children’s book award was created as a way to identify and honor the very best writing and illustrations by and about American Indians.
Books selected to receive the award will present Native Americans in the fullness of their humanity in the present and past contexts.

The American Music Awards were created by showman Dick Clark in 1973 as an alternative to the Grammy Awards; they honor achievements in popular music and the recording business. The awards salute the entire spectrum of music from country-western stars to soul singers, as well as hard rock, rap and traditional.

The Americas Award is given in recognition of U.S. works of fiction, poetry, folklore, or selected non-fiction (from picture books to works for young adults) published in the previous year in English or Spanish that authentically and engagingly portray Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latinos in the United States. By combining both and linking the Americas, the award reaches beyond geographic border, as well as multicultural-international boundries, focusing instead upon cultural heritages within the hemisphere.

The Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction were established in 2012 to recognize the best fiction and nonfiction books for adult readers published in the U.S. the previous year.

The Anthony is named in honor of Anthony Boucher, the well-known writer, critic, and fan of the mystery genre. Awards are made on the basis of the votes of mystery fans worldwide and presented at the annual World Mystery Convention, also known as Bouchercon. The award is usually in the form of a dagger stabbing a black book mounted on a wooden plaque. The dagger is removable to be used as a letter opener. Occasionally the award will be varied, to address a local motif, for the annual convention.

Named in honor of America’s most cherished publisher/printer, the Benjamin Franklin Awards recognizes excellence in independent publishing.

Given to the artist who has created the most distinguished picture book of the year, this award was originally proposed in 1937 by Fredric G. Melcher, representing a general concern that the Newbery Medal did not appropriately address the role of illustrators in the children’s book arena. The award is named in honor of Randolph J. Caldecott, the 19th century English illustrator. Officially,it is awarded to the “artist of the most distinguished American Picture Book for Children published in the United States during the preceding year.” The artist must be a citizen or resident of the United States and does not have to be author of the text.

The California Young Reader Medal is a children’s choice award sponsored by four statewide organizations: California Association of Teachers of English (CATE), California Library Association (CLA), California Reading Association (CRA) and California School Library Association (CSLA). Young people suggest the names of favorite books for nomination, or teachers and librarians note repeatedly read or requested titles, and these are submitted to the California Young Reader Medal Committee. Students across the state spend the school year reading nominated books; voting takes place in the spring. It is a two-year cycle from the time of nomination by students to the presentation of the awards. A book must be an original work of fiction published within the last five years and written by a living author.

The medal recognizes an outstanding children’s book published in the United Kingdom. Along with the Greenaway Medal, this prize is presented by the Library Association, the United Kingdom’s leading professional body for librarians. The award is presented in the year following publication; the date noted is the year of publication.

Named for the main character in E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web, the purpose of the Charlotte Award is to encourage students to read outstanding literature and ultimately become life-long readers. Additionally, the award recognizes the authors and illustrators of such literature.

The E.B. White Read Aloud Award, established in 2004, honors a book that reflects the universal read aloud standards that were created by the work of author E.B. White. Members of the Association of Booksellers for children (ABC) select one book a year based on its universal appeal as a “terrific” read aloud book for children.

The Florida Book Awards is an annual awards program that recognizes, honors, and celebrates the best Florida literature published in the previous year.

In 2016, the Man Booker International Prize will merge with the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, and will transition to an annual award recognizing a work translated into English. Previously (and in 2015), the International Prize has been awarded every two years for a body of work.

The Booker awards are administered by the National Book League in the United Kingdom. It is awarded to the best full-length novel written in English by a citizen of the UK, the Commonwealth, Eire, Pakistan or South Africa.

The Michael L. Printz Award recognizes excellence in young adult literature. The prize is named in memory of the late Michael L. Printz, a Topeka, Kansas school librarian known for his efforts to identify and trumpet quality literature for young adults.

The Newbery is awarded to the most distinguished American children’s book published the previous year. Fredric G. Melcher proposed the award to the Children’s Section of the American Library Association in June, 1921. It is named for the Eighteenth-Century English bookseller John Newbery.

The Nobel Prizes have been presented to the Laureates at ceremonies on December 10 each year. This day is significant as the birthday of Alfred Nobel (1833-1896), the inventor of dynamite, whose Nobel Foundation funds the awards. The stated intent of the Nobel Prize in Literature is to recognize an individual author for the contribution to humanity that has been made by the author’s body of literary work.

Each year students from across the Pacific Nothwest are asked to read from a list of titles and vote for their favorite. This list of nominees has been chosen by teachers and librarians from books published within the previous three years. The Young Reader’s Choice Award is the oldest children’s choice award in North America and the only one to be chosen by children in both the United States and Canada. The Pacific Northwest Libary Asssociation sponsors the award and presents the prize at its annual conference.
